Abroad
‘Mauritius is a paradise for tourists, but not when you are living there’, this has been told me several times. A lot of people want to move abroad for their carriers and a better future. Job opportunities and living standards seem to be better abroad. Even people who have never been in another country, long for a life abroad. ‘Mauritius is too small. The opportunities are poor and it gets boring here.’ Outside everything seems to be more exciting, the way of living must be much better and the job opportunities will get Mauritius abroad wherever they want.

Multicultural paradise?
Mauritius is known to be a multicultural society in which different groups live peacefully together. Most people I talk to will confirm this, and say that they respect other ethnic groups and religions. Mauritius even can be a good multicultural example for other countries. Whenever you see the wars in other countries about religion or cultural groups, you can be proud to be a Mauritian.
However, lots of people who are telling me these kind of stories, confirm meanwhile that a lot of families won’t accept marriages with someone from another group. It’s okay to be neighbours, but the most close friends have the same ancestor background and religion. It is easier to understand people with the same cultural background.
